Why Rock Climbing in Olympos?
Olympos is one of Turkey's most important rock climbing destinations. Located in the Kumluca district of Antalya on the Lycian Way, this ancient city has a unique atmosphere that attracts climbers from around the world. When you pass through the ancient ruins and reach the beach, limestone cliffs right at sea level await you.
The area has over 400 routes and more than 10 different sectors. A wide difficulty range from 3a to 8c on the French grading system satisfies both first-time amateurs and professionals who have been dancing on rocks for years. The sharp holds, pockets, tufas and natural cracks that limestone offers turn every route into a different adventure.
What sets Olympos apart from other climbing areas is that after climbing you can walk a few steps and jump into the Mediterranean. It is truly rare to find another climbing spot where nature, history and sea are so intertwined.
Olympos Climbing Sectors
The climbing gardens of Olympos consist of multiple sectors within walking distance of each other. Each sector has its own character, sun position and difficulty range. Here are the most popular sectors:
Paradise Sector
The most iconic climbing spot in Olympos. This sector, which deserves its name, is known for its stunning sea-facing view. It contains both beginner and advanced routes. Reached with a short walk from the beach, its big advantage is being completely in shade after 1:00 PM.
Horguc Sector
Ideal for those who love overhang (negative incline) climbing. Tufa formations and cave structures offer routes that require technique and power. Located right below the road making access easy, it stays in shade from morning until 2:00 PM.
Valley Sector
One of the most underrated but most enjoyable sectors in Olympos. Stands out with its sunny position, comfortable safety points and beautiful views. Routes of 6a and above are predominant.
Dershane Sector
The most suitable sector for beginner level climbers. Located in a deep canyon, Dershane is ideal for training purposes with its 5 and 6 grade dominant routes. The natural shade of the canyon provides comfortable climbing even on hot days.
Kadir's Sector
Located across from the famous Kadir's Treehouse, on the other side of the river. Contains about a dozen routes between 5c and 6b. Being in shade in the afternoon makes it a choice for second session climbing.
La Plaj Sector
Although access is a bit more difficult, the view more than makes up for it. At this seaside sector, humidity is lower and the air is cooler. At least 70 meters of rope is recommended.
Genoese Sector
Located near Genoese Harbor, by the sea, this sector consists of two parts: Genoese Harbor (seaside routes) and Genoese Cave (impressive cave climbs). Climbing while listening to the sounds of waves, this sector is one of the most atmospheric spots in Olympos.
Cirali Sector
This sector gives good climbing especially in the morning hours and offers great routes from 5a to 6a for beginner climbers. For experienced climbers, negative routes provide a wide range of options from 6b to 7c. Known for its high walls, overhang structures and abundant tufa formations.
Trial Climbing
If you have never rock climbed before, Olympos is exactly the right place to start. In our trial climbing program, our professional instructors teach you basic techniques, equipment usage and safety principles step by step.
Trial climbing usually takes 2-3 hours and consists of the following stages:
- Equipment introduction: Correct use of helmet, harness, climbing shoes and rope systems.
- Basic techniques: Foot placement, weight transfer, hold types and body position.
- Practical climbing: Safe climbing experience on beginner routes with a guide.
- Safety training: Top-rope system, falling technique and partner safety.
If your confidence has increased after the trial climbing, you can continue with our half-day or full-day climbing packages.
Deep Water Solo (DWS)
One of the experiences that makes Olympos special on the world climbing map is Deep Water Solo. Without rope or safety equipment, you climb on cliffs directly above the sea. When you fall, you find yourself in the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean.
Genoese Bay and surrounding cliffs are the most popular spots for DWS. This discipline requires high concentration and experience; however, under suitable conditions and with a guide, intermediate level climbers can also live this unique experience. High sea temperatures in summer create ideal conditions for DWS.
Best Climbing Season
Climbing is possible 12 months of the year in Olympos, but there are most comfortable periods:
- Most ideal period: Late September to early May. Mild weather, low humidity and excellent grip conditions.
- Winter months: On sunny days, climbing in a t-shirt is possible. The mild Mediterranean climate of Olympos allows outdoor climbing even in winter.
- Summer months (June-August): Temperature can exceed 40C and humidity is high. However, since sectors are in different locations, there is always a sector where you can climb in shade at any time of day. For DWS, summer is the best period.
